Water Softeners

May 15, 2024

Can I install a water softener myself?

Absolutely! Hard water can be a real menace to your home and health. The good news is that installing a water softener is an effective solution that will eliminate hard water in your home, that you can accomplish yourself.

Advantages of home water softening

  • Prevents build-up of hard water minerals (scale) on the inside of pipes, fixtures, dishwashers, and hot water heaters.
  • Helps to lengthen the service life of most appliances.
  • Helps to reduce/prevent mineral spots on dishes.
  • Prevents and reduces soap film, scum and detergent curds in sinks, bathtubs, and washing machines.

What is Soft Water?

Water naturally tries to dissolve whatever it encounters including a variety of minerals such as calcium and magnesium (water hardness). Whether a water supply is considered “hard” or “soft” depends on how much of these minerals are dissolved in your water. Soft water contains lower levels of calcium and/or magnesium than hard water.

General Hardness Level Guidelines are:

  • 0 – 3.0 grains per gallon (gpg) is considered soft water.
  • 3.0 – 7 gpg is considered moderately hard water.
  • 7.0 gpg and above is regarded as hard water and should be treated with a water softener.

What you need to know about water softeners

Because a water softener reduces water hardness by removing heavy minerals like calcium, iron, and magnesium, a water softener helps prevent common water problems including hard water, mineral deposits, and scale buildup that can lead to leaky faucets, restricted or clogged plumbing pipes, and damage to hot water-based appliances such as dishwashers and water heaters.

As an added bonus, soft water is also much better and healthier for hair and skin than hard water.
